Bend, Oregon's BMX Racing Organization

Residents and visitors of Bend can get involved with an activity that is exciting, healthy, and family oriented. High  Desert BMX organizes bicycle motocross racing at Big Sky Sports Complex.  BMX racing is the discipline of BMX biking that stresses the skilled navigation of the track at the fastest speed possible.  Bicyclists of all experience levels and age groups can enjoy a challenge during the practice sessions, workshops, and races at the track.  HDBMX provides a safe, structured, and positive place for people of both genders to ride, learn, and compete on a regular basis.  Practice sessions and workshops stress good sportsmanship, personal growth, and skills acquisition.  Races are organized so riders of similar skill level compete in the same groups, called motos. It is even common for entire families to race on the same day because each member has their own moto.

There are opportunities that allow new riders to try the sport at very low cost.  There is a free one-day trial membership available.  Memberships in the American Bicycle Association are required for the rest of season at a cost of $45 which includes the fees to participate in the first race for free.  Families receive discounts for multiple memberships.  Any functioning safe bicycle can be used and loaner equipment is also available on a limited basis. In Bend, the 2011 season begins on April 4 and continues into late Fall. There are races every Wednesday evening and Saturday morning. Normal entry fees are $6.00 and there are always prizes of ribbons or trophies.

HDBMX is a non-profit organization run entirely by volunteers.  The organization is creating partnerships with other groups to promote this healthy and enriching hobby.  Their efforts reflect what is happening in many communities. The number of BMX racers around the world has steadily grown for years and the hobbyists and professionals have created an exciting sport culture.  BMX racing has even become the newest Summer Olympic sport. Anyone interested in learning more is invited to contact one of the High Desert BMX board members.
